I was assigned a feature of my choice this past winter in my writing class. I thought a roundup of some of my favorite thrifts stores would be fun, practical, and worth sharing. 🙂 There are so many reasons why thrifting is a worthwhile venture. My personal experience of thrifting as a hobby has evolved … Continue reading 4 of Raleigh’s Best Thrift Stores
Processing Grief through Poetry
Tomorrow is the last day of National Poetry Month. Poetry also happens to be the first thing I started writing when trying to process the impending difficult and quick decline of my Dad’s health this past fall. Though I dabbled in writing before, the need for my creativity and words to dance to the music … Continue reading Processing Grief through Poetry
A Little Writing Homework
In January, I took a writing class called The Art of Writing about your Experiences with a local writing with a creative nonfiction nonprofit in Raleigh, NC. It was challenging and supportive. My instructor Rachel offered years of expertise and feedback on each of our homework assignments. One week we had to do a product … Continue reading A Little Writing Homework
A New Year and New Rhythm
The first official day of chronicling this new writing journey.
He is human.
I wrote this in April. But like most things I write, read it over, wait for Jon to read over it and make edits, read it again, and then go back and forth as to whether I should post it. I don’t speak as an expert on race. I speak as an expert at being … Continue reading He is human.
Black History Month
Growing up I was taught mostly about people that looked like me unless I was being taught about slavery, Martin Luther King Jr, or black leaders at random during the morning announcements during the Month of February. I am extremely thankful for my black coworkers, fellow teachers that showed our students they could be anything they wanted to be and showed them black people making great strides (not because they weren’t able to achieve but because American society and historical cycles made it extra hard/near impossible for them) to be examples and live this out.
A Prayer for 2021
Written January 1-6, 2021 Good and Gracious Father. You are maker and creator of all that is good. You are omnipresent (everywhere at the same time- Isaiah 57:15) which is hard to believe and to understand, but at the same time experienced daily. You provide hope to the widow in India while also providing peace … Continue reading A Prayer for 2021
A Skewed View and A Mural
I realized a few years ago and even more clearly as of late, that I have such a skewed view of black men and crime. One of the first times I realized this was at Union Market in DC a few years ago. There was a mural of head shots of black men and boys … Continue reading A Skewed View and A Mural
Another Realization
There is so much I have to learn and so many areas that need to be challenged in my heart and mind. These moments highlight the lies and beliefs that shape my perspecive of people of color in relation to white people.
Accountability for All
Weeks later, I grow frustrated with how different articles say different things. I wish the reading gave me clarity and answers to why the officers weren’t (at the very least) fired, why the mistakes made during the operation aren’t a big deal to anyone in leadership, why it took so long for us to hear about Breonna’s death, or why it has taken so long for a glimpse of accountability to appear.
